There is a good amount of social taboo that is associated with women who choose to travel alone. The more obvious caution is of course of safety. Everyone knows what happens to Liam Neesen's on screen daughter in Taken and naturally that horror may cross ones mind when planning to travel alone, especially as a young college girl. Yet putting fear aside, there is something quite exhilarating being alone in a foreign country. My first experience of this is yet to come when I fly solo to Vienna in mid September for a small weekend excursion. I'm super excited and quite sure I will be giddy with nervousness the days leading to the big step towards independence. Reading this post on Life: Traveling Alone, and NY Magazine's article gave me some pretty insightful thoughts on traveling solo.
